I like the Bluffer’s Guides in general but took this one on sex up with some reservation. Mostly, I wondered, how do you hit the right tone? Hip but not off-putting? This author resorts to that most accommodating of tools: humor. Her own brand is clever and understated, but it is often what she reports others have said and done that sets the pace. Take Barbara Bush’s classic: “Clinton lied. A man might forget where he parks or where he lives, but he never forgets oral sex. . .no matter how bad it is.” Such gems are scattered throughout the narrative, giving it a sparkle that is truly enjoyable. Of course there are many topics covered: books on sex, anatomy, seduction, oral sex, positions, toys, contraception, STI/STD and more. There is a lot of fun how-to, including recognizing the tells of whether you are putting yourself across or not. Revelations, too, abound of the sort that might encourage one to become a bluffer on sex, e.g. the average size of the male member and longest on record. There are notable omissions, however. With the exception of the SDI/SDT discussion and various references to SM, the darker aspects of sex, as well sex practices and sexual relations out of the mainstream are left unexplored. More inclusive treatment would make the Guide more comprehensive and useful to your average bluffer but perhaps less readable by a general audience. You’re advised to wait for the “Advanced” Guide to satisfy curiosity about the outré. Nevertheless, very readable and quite informative this Guide is, written with a light touch of humor and a breezy tone that does not condescend or become heavy-handed. All in all, it’s great fun.
