In essence this is what it comes down to. Will we in modern society choose to accept same-sex marriage out of a logical sense of equality, or will we choose to reject it because of an emotional concern for negative consequences? Regardless of which side of the debate you may find yourself, this book does an outstanding job of presenting the best arguments from each perspective. I found Dr. Corvino's writing style particularly engaging, and his logic sound. Ms. Gallagher does a great job of presenting her opposing views without resorting to the typically pedantic religious stance. What I found most profound was not the arguments themselves, but the fact that both authors have such a deep respect for one another. They travel together, debate together, write together--all with diametrically opposed views on same-sex marriage, and yet manage to present these views with restraint and a lack of vitriol. It must be noted that most people purchasing and reviewing this book already have a deeply held belief one way or the other, and therefore most of their reviews on this book reflect this bias. Reject the 1-star reviews as coming from those who hate the opposition, not the book itself. This book is not about hate, but about thoughtful dialogue on a difficult issue facing contemporary civilization, and should therefore occupy a distinct position on any open-minded reader's bookshelf.Highly recommended.
