I have written two short books about prostitution in Wallace and the Silver Valley and I am thus somewhat familiar with the subject. Heather Branstetter’s book is a must-read book for anyone interested in prostitution, mining towns, northwest history, and the most interesting town of Wallace, Idaho. It was hard for me to put the book down.Branstetter has done extensive research on Wallace, the Silver Valley and the history of its prostitution. She has used the tools of a good researcher including interviews, newspaper files, legal documents and visiting the sites of the old bordellos. She presents information from over 90 interviews, which reveal much about the character and attitudes of the citizens towards the 130- year history of prostitution in the area. She is also to be complimented for integrating never-before-published photographs into her text. There is a wealth of information in this book. Just read it and you will see what I mean.I sincerely hope that she continues to write about prostitution in the American west. This retired professor gives the author a well deserved “A” which easily converts into five stars.
